» SNES9x

Development of Snes9x began in July of 1997 when Snes96's Gary Henderson and Snes97's Jerremy Koot merged their respective emulators to create Snes9x. Since then, Snes9x has been ported to more platforms than any other emulator, though most of these ports are not official branches. The source code of the emulator has been available since early 1999 under custom licensure restricting commercial usage. Snes9x is still being actively developed despite the departure of its original developers.

Snes9x is notable in that it was among the first SNES emulators to emulate most coprocessors at some level, with the exception of the SPC7110. It was also the first SNES emulator to offer sound output.

Aside from emulating much of the system's internal and external hardware to obtain a high compatibility rate with games, Snes9x has many notable features as of the current version:

* Video scale adjustment
* Video filters
* Video synchronization
* Windowed and fullscreen display modes
* Music ripping in SPC format
* Soft-patching in IPS format
* State saving and loading
* Cheat code creation, modification, and application in CHT format
